Introduction
Management of disease complications and disability prevention (MDDP) are vital for improving public health and should be fully integrated into the health system to ensure sustainability. Several of the roadmaps for eliminating NTDs have included strategies that identify guidelines for MDDP. These strategies focus on alleviating suffering and disability of disease through the introduction of basic activities. In the management of disease complications, these activities include additional medical treatment and surgery.
The Global Program to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis (GPELF) strategy for example, supports surgery for men with hydrocele and antibiotic treatment for episodes of adenolymphangitis (ADL). In Buruli ulcer, management of disease complications includes surgery (debridement, skin grafting and scar revision) and scar management.
