Introduction
Physical therapy provides services that develop, maintain and restore people’s maximum movement and functional ability as well as it prevents or reduces deterioration in functioning. Physical therapy also helps people to maximize their quality of life, looking at physical, psychological, emotional and social wellbeing.
People with NTD-related disabilities may experience movement impairments and activity limitations. For example, in people affected by lymphatic filariasis walking could be painful and almost impossible. With physical therapy (i.e. elevate and walk exercises) they can restore or increase their strength, endurance, and flexibility of joints; improve their balance, posture, and range of motion or functional mobility; and reduce the risk of falls.
For which NTDs is this relevant?
Physiotherapy is relevant for people affected by leprosy, lymphatic filariasis, podoconiosis and Buruli ulcer.
