About this course

From skin discomfort and irritation to infections and decreased prosthesis fit and functionality, sweating on the residual limb presents a significant challenge with wide-ranging impacts. This course provides an actionable overview of the negative health and quality of life sequelae of excess sweating (hyperhidrosis or Hh) of the residual limb among prosthetic users, and how care providers can help. During the course, healthcare providers will learn: about patients’ experiences with this issue, how to diagnose residual limb Hh, the components and mechanics of a prosthesis, and the most-recommended treatment options currently available to help reduce, manage or eliminate sweating of the residual limb for improved prosthesis functionality and patient comfort.

This course delves into the complexities of excess sweating (hyperhidrosis or Hh) of residual limbs, particularly focusing on sweating’s impacts on skin health and prosthesis use – including ramifications on a patient’s ability to use a prosthesis safely and effectively. The course further provides a comprehensive understanding of the practical mechanics of prostheses, optimal prosthesis care, and the range of current treatment options available to help reduce, manage, or eliminate sweating at the prosthesis focal area.

The course aims to equip healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to diagnose residual limb sweating issues, recognize the significance of the relevant patient experience, provide appropriate and evidence-based treatment options, and improve quality of life for individuals with residual limb sweating that is negatively impacting prosthesis use and/or skin health.

What you'll learn:

  • Explain the impact of residual limb hyperhidrosis on quality of life, skin health and prosthetic functioning
  • Recognize the experiences and challenges faced by individuals with residual limb hyperhidrosis who use prostheses
  • Describe evidence-based strategies and treatment modalities (which may include combinations of treatments) for managing sweat and related issues among prosthesis wearers
  • Identify gaps in current data and understanding related to this issue and areas where further research and innovation is needed to provide more treatment options or more optimal treatment options to mitigate the range of impacts associated in residual limb sweating and resultant prosthesis limitations.
