AB - To protect and promote children’s wellbeing and full participation within the family and community systems that surround and support them, the IASC mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) reference group promotes a holistic, community-based approach to child and family programming. There is a need to reaffirm and better operationalize this commitment in evolving humanitarian contexts and crises. The UNICEF Community-Based MHPSS Operational Guidelines recommend approaches to improve both the scale and quality of community-based MHPSS in humanitarian settings, and promote scaling interventions based on evidence from implementation science research. The guidelines operationalize standards that ensure the conditions for optimal child development and child and family wellbeing, and provide a framework and resources to plan and implement multilayered, community-engaged MHPSS. The guidelines describe practical examples of approaches across the social and psychological spectrum for implementing agencies to understand the requirements for quality, community-based MHPSS for children and families.
