Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are a group of infectious diseases prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions, causing significant morbidity and mortality to the world’s poorest populations but receiving relatively lesser funding and attention. NTDs are prevalent in communities with poor financial resources, inadequate sanitation and limited healthcare facilities, indicating their social dimension. This chapter briefly introduces the readers to NTDs, their causes, social dimensions, impact on the affected populations and the challenges in controlling NTDs. The readers are also introduced to the global efforts that target the control and elimination of NTDs. The chapter argues that NTDs require comprehensive interventions integrating medical and social domains for successful control and elimination. By emphasising the social dimension, the chapter postulates the case of NTD social work as a relevant discipline that works in tandem with other public health disciplines for the control and elimination of NTDs.
