Social dimensions refer to the social, economic, cultural and behavioural elements which shape human interactions, practices and living conditions within a society. These dimensions play an important role in determining the vulnerability of populations to various diseases. Poverty, as a pervasive social determinant, significantly influences the landscape of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) in India. Economic deprivation arising from poverty not only restricts individual’s access to healthcare but also forces them to pursue vulnerable occupations and leads to poor living conditions, heightening their susceptibility to NTDs. Moreover, social identity, as well as cultural practices, further complicates disease dynamics by influencing treatment-seeking behaviours and perpetuating stigma. These social dynamics interact with environmental conditions, personal behaviours and the healthcare system limitations, forming a complex web of factors that impact the prevalence and outcomes of NTDs. Effectively addressing NTDs in India requires a holistic approach that integrates both environmental and social dimensions. Targeted interventions aimed at improving living conditions, enhancing healthcare access and promoting social equity are imperative in combating NTDs and mitigating their impact on vulnerable populations.
